On this page, I share my story from my early days as a school student to my DPhil journey at the University of Oxford, along with the key stages that shaped my academic and professional path. Perhaps, through sharing this journey, I can inspire future generations of geographers, and anyone who has ever believed that some fields of study have no future.
في هذه الصفحة، أشارك قصتي منذ أن كنت طالباً في المدرسة وحتى رحلتي في دراسة الدكتوراه بجامعة أكسفورد، مروراً بالمحطات التي شكّلت مسيرتي الأكاديمية والمهنية. و لعلني، من خلال مشاركة هذه الرحلة، أُلهم أجيالاً قادمة من الجغرافيين، وكل من اعتقد يوماً أن بعض التخصصات لا مستقبل لها.
My Story قصتي
In high school, I chose the humanities track because, at the time, I was not particularly interested in putting much effort into my studies. However, year by year, and by the time I reached Grade 12, this mindset gradually began to change, and a different sense of ambition started to take shape.
في المرحلة الثانوية، اخترت القسم الأدبي لأنني لم أكن أرغب حينها في بذل الكثير من الجهد في الدراسة. لكن مع مرور السنوات ووصولي إلى الصف الثاني عشر، بدأت هذه النظرة تتغير تدريجياً، وبدأت معها ملامح طموح ناضج تتشكل.
I entered Kuwait University without a clear idea of what I wanted to study. By chance, I found myself in the College of Social Sciences, where I decided to major in Geography & Environment after hearing about the career opportunities the field could offer in the oil sector, a classical vision that every Kuwaiti understands!
دخلت جامعة الكويت دون أن تكون لدي صورة واضحة عن التخصص الذي أريد اختياره. قادتني الصدفة إلى كلية العلوم الاجتماعية، وهناك قررت التخصص في الجغرافيا & البيئة بعد أن سمعت عن الفرص الوظيفية التي يوفرها هذا المجال في القطاع النفطي، نظرة كلاسيكية يفهما أي شاب كويتي!
After completing my second year at university, I was honoured by the Minister of Higher Education for ranking first in Physical and Environmental Geography, an achievement I repeated in my third year. It was an exceptional motivation that showed me that hard work never goes unrecognized!
بعد إتمام سنتي الثانية في الجامعة، كرّمني وزير التعليم العالي لحصولي على المركز الأول في تخصص الجغرافيا الطبيعية والبيئية، وهو إنجاز كررته في السنة الثالثة. كان ذلك حافزاً استثنائياً أظهر لي أن لكل مجتهد نصيباً من التقدير!
My vision for an academic future was becoming clearer, so I used the awards from my academic achievements at Kuwait University and my first-place prize from the Kuwait Geographical Society to travel to the UK and study English in preparation for a master’s degree.
بدأت رؤيتي لمستقبلي العلمي تتضح، فقررت استثمار جوائز تفوقي في جامعة الكويت وفوزي بالمركز الأول في مسابقة الجمعية الجغرافية الكويتية للسفر إلى المملكة المتحدة ودراسة اللغة الإنجليزية استعداداً للماجستير.
After returning from the UK, I graduated from Kuwait University with First-Class Honours and was honoured by the Amir of Kuwait. From there, I began planning my first professional step.
بعد عودتي من المملكة المتحدة، تخرجت من جامعة الكويت بتقدير امتياز مع مرتبة الشرف، وحظيت بتكريم من أمير الكويت. ومن هنا بدأت أخطط لخطوتي المهنية الأولى.
At the age of 22, shortly after earning my bachelor’s degree, I wrote my first book, The Four Spheres: An Introduction to Physical Geography and Geo-system. My message at the time was simple: science should never be boring to readers, even when it is about geography and rocks! And you don’t have to be old to write!
في عمر 22 عاماً، وفور حصولي على البكالوريوس، كتبت كتابي الأول «الأغلفة الأربعة: مقدمة إلى الجغرافيا الطبيعية والنظام الأرضي». وكانت رسالتي آنذاك بسيطة: لا ينبغي للعلم أن يكون مملاً للقراء، حتى عندما نتحدث عن الجغرافيا والصخور! ولا ينبغي أن تكون طاعن في السن لتكتب!
I began my master’s degree in Geology and Geographic Information Systems at Kuwait University, studying across the Geology and Geography departments. I soon found myself studying mathematics, statistics, and programming in the college of science (overload), thinking with a smile: here I was, back to science again!
بدأت دراسة الماجستير في الجيولوجيا ونظم المعلومات الجغرافية بجامعة الكويت، متنقلاً بين قسمي الجيولوجيا والجغرافيا. وجدت نفسي أدرس الرياضيات والإحصاء والبرمجة في كلية العلوم، وكنت أفكر حينها: ها أنا أعود إلى العلوم من جديد بعد هروبي منها في المدرسة!
My master’s project was selected as an outstanding GIS project in Kuwait, earning me a nomination for the Young Scholar Award at the Esri User Conference in San Diego 2018. There, I was honoured by Jack Dangermond (Esri founder) with the first international award of my journey!
تم اختيار مشروعي الماجستير كمشروع متميز في نظم المعلومات الجغرافية على مستوى الكويت، ورُشحت لجائزة العالم الشاب في مؤتمر مستخدمي Esri في سان دييغو. وهناك، كرّمني جاك دانجرموند (مؤسس ايزري) بأول جائزة دولية لي!
After returning to Kuwait, I received sponsorship from Esri Kuwait to write my second book, The Science of Where: An Introduction to Geographic Information Systems, aimed at helping GIS users transition from ArcGIS to ArcGIS Pro. I was also fortunate to receive the support of current Kuwait’s Prime Minister at the time.
بعد عودتي إلى الكويت، حصلت على رعاية من Esri Kuwait لإعداد كتابي الثاني «علم المكان: مقدمة إلى نظم المعلومات الجغرافية»، بهدف تسهيل انتقال مستخدمي GIS إلى ArcGIS Pro من ArcGIS، كما كنت محظوظاً بحصول هذا المشروع على دعم رئيس مجلس الوزراء الحالي آنذاك.
Then came the COVID era, bringing much of life to a standstill, but not my journey in scientific research where the had time during the lockdown. During that time, I wrote and published my first research paper in an international peer-reviewed journal, marking the beginning of a growing journey of research and scientific publications.
جاء عصر كوفيد وتوقفت معه جوانب كثيرة من الحياة، لكنه لم دعم رحلتي في البحث العلمي بالوقت اللازم في وقت الحظر. خلال تلك الفترة، كتبت ونشرت أول ورقة علمية لي في مجلة دولية محكّمة، ومنها بدأت رحلتي نحو نشر المزيد من الأبحاث والأوراق العلمية.
At the age of 27, I received the State of Kuwait Encouragement Award in Geography for my book The Science of Where, becoming the youngest author in the award’s history. It marked an important milestone and my entry into the world of major regional awards, not as a student this time, but a an author!
في سن السابعة والعشرين، حصلت على جائزة دولة الكويت التشجيعية في مجال الجغرافيا عن كتابي «علم المكان»، لأصبح بذلك أصغر مؤلف في تاريخ الجائزة. كانت محطة مهمة نقلتني إلى عالم الجوائز الإقليمية الكبرى ليس كطالب هذه المرة بل ككاتب!
By the end of the COVID period, I had begun to establish myself within the scientific community, becoming a peer reviewer for several international journals published by Springer, Elsevier, Nature, and others.
مع انتهاء فترة كوفيد، كنت قد بدأت في ترسيخ حضوري في المجتمع العلمي، وأصبحت محكّماً علمياً لعدد من المجلات لدى دور نشر عالمية مثل Springer وElsevier وNature وغيرها.
The COVID period delayed my plans to continue my PhD journey, but it opened the door to another journey in a field I love. I began my second master’s degree in Marine Sciences in beautiful Italy, through a collaboration between the University of Trieste and the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, one of the world’s leading research centres.
أعاقت فترة كوفيد خططي لمواصلة رحلة الدكتوراه، لكنها فتحت أمامي رحلة أخرى في مجال أحبه. بدأت الماجستير الثاني في علوم البحار في إيطاليا الجميلة، ضمن تعاون بين جامعة ترييستي ومركز عبدالسلام الدولي للفيزياء النظرية، أحد أبرز المراكز البحثية عالمياً.
After completing my master’s degree, I never expected to receive an offer to pursue my doctorate at a university ranked among the very best in the world, particularly in Geography. But there it was, an offer from the University of Oxford was finally on the table!
بعد إنهاء الماجستير، لم أكن أتوقع أن أتلقى قبولاً لدراسة الدكتوراه في جامعة تتصدر التصنيفات العالمية، وفي الجغرافيا تحديداً. لكن ها نحن ذا، أصبح قبول جامعة أكسفورد على الطاولة!
My greatest challenge at that point was meeting Oxford’s demanding English language requirements (7.5 IELTS), especially as my undergraduate education in Geography had been entirely in Arabic. But with determination, persistence, and repeated effort, nothing is impossible.
كان التحدي الأكبر في تلك اللحظة استيفاء متطلبات اللغة الإنجليزية المرتفعة في أكسفورد (7.5 لاختبار الآيلتس) ، خصوصاً أن دراستي الجامعية في الجغرافيا كانت باللغة العربية. لكن بالعزيمة والمحاولة والإصرار، لا شيء مستحيل.
I began my journey at the University of Oxford, and at first, it felt almost like an unbelievable dream. Along the way, I had many opportunities to learn and grow, including specialised courses delivered by world-leading institutions such as NASA and Harvard University.
بدأت رحلتي في جامعة أكسفورد، وفي البداية بدا الأمر وكأنه حلم يصعب تصديقه. وخلال دراستي، أتيحت لي فرص عديدة للتعلم والتطور، من بينها حضور دورات متخصصة مقدمة من مؤسسات عالمية مثل ناسا وجامعة هارفرد.

Today, as I approach the final stages of my doctoral journey, my research career has grown to include more than 40 scientific papers and book chapters, alongside eight authored books, including three atlases and two book translations, one of which is the first Arabic translation of Wegener’s legendary The Origin of Continents and Oceans.
في الوقت الحالي، وأنا في المراحل النهائية من رحلة الدكتوراه، وصلت مسيرتي البحثية إلى أكثر من 40 ورقة وفصل علمي، إلى جانب تأليف 8 كتب علمية، من بينها ثلاثة أطالس، وترجمة كتابين، أحدهما أول ترجمة عربية لكتاب فاغنر الشهير «أصل القارات والمحيطات».
My journey did not stop at research and writing books. I founded a scientific publishing house that has published more than 40 books to date. I have also participated in 10 international conferences through presentations, posters, and research papers, taking my academic journey to new places and experiences around the world.
لم تتوقف رحلتي عند البحث وكتابة الكتب، فقد أسست دار نشر علمية ساهمت حتى اليوم في نشر أكثر من 40 كتاباً. كما شاركت في 10 مؤتمرات دولية من خلال العروض التقديمية والملصقات والأوراق العلمية، لتأخذني رحلتي العلمية إلى أماكن وتجارب جديدة حول العالم.
Beyond academia, my passion for exploration has taken me to more than 50 countries around the world, while also leading me to become a licensed diver and drone pilot, among other experinces. For me, learning does not always happen inside a classroom.
وبعيداً عن العالم الأكاديمي، أخذني شغفي بالاستكشاف إلى أكثر من 50 دولة حول العالم، وحصلت خلال هذه الرحلة على رخصة للغوص وأخرى لقيادة الطائرات المسيّرة وغيرها. فبالنسبة لي، التعلم لا يحدث دائماً داخل قاعات الدراسة.
